Champions of Change

Leadership Development and Sports Camp 2010

Champions of Change is a special and unique camp that inspires and challenges campers through a variety of leadership development and sports activities each week. The safe and fun environment provided allows for youth to make new friends, learn from a variety of excellent role models, and participate as individuals who can make positive changes in their community.

The Leadership Development and Sports Camp is open to children between the ages of 8 - 13 years.  The camp will be held for five selected weeks Monday to Friday, from 9:00am until 4:00pm at Courtice North Public School during July and August. Two weeks of the summer, Monday to Friday 9:00am until 4:00pm will be spent at St. Paul's United Church in Bowmanville.

Each of the seven-week programs have a different theme. The scheduled activities, events and interesting guest speakers are chosen based on these themes. Last summer 11 different and returning guest speakers visited camp including: Luke Vankroonenberg the up-and-coming drummer from The Ocean Buried, Olympic competitor Graham Hockley, a representative from Durham Deaf Services to teach sign language, and Cathy from Cathy's Crawly Composting to name just a few! This year's lineup will promise just as much variety!

Each week participants also learn about their community by volunteering and going on a variety of field trips. Champions of Change have an important relationship/partnership with the seniors at White Cliffe Terrace Retirement Residence. Every week campers spend time getting to know and having fun with the seniors playing brain gym, bingo or other activities. Fridays are reserved for field trips! Campers head to the Metro Toronto Zoo, the Ontario Science Centre, Camp Kawartha for high ropes and swimming, or other locations to celebrate the closing of each week! The price of all excursions and activities held at camp are part of the registration fee. The only additional cost at camp is an optional hot lunch provided on Wednesdays, or the purchase of something white and 100% cotton for our weekly tie dying sessions.

Campers are eligible to receive the "Leader of the Week" award and prize to conclude the festivities, but all campers receive a certificate of completion from the Camp Director.

The camp is staffed by 1 Camp Director and 4 outstanding Camp Counsellors who lead the participants through every different and rewarding weeklong experience.

Why do parents/guardians choose to send their kid(s) to

Champions of Change over other camps?

"It's an event-filled week of fun for the campers -- not just daycare, like some of the other camps my children have attended."

"It is great value for money and the camp counsellors are great!"

"This camp is a little different in that the children get involved in the community. I liked that they had a charity car wash and went for a visit at the seniors' residence."

Words from our previous campers:

"I'm excited to come back this year because my cousin is coming with me one week."

Re: Favourite memory "I had fun washing cars and getting wet at the Charity Car Wash. Also, I loved going to Cobourg Beach"
